Building Your Plan: Navigating Options, Legal Requirements & Minimizing Taxes
Amanda Pedrett and Mindi Reid, Partners at Hyatt McIntire & Associates

An estate plan is not one-size-fits-all. Farmers and ranchers face unique challenges in this area. Our firm serves farmers, ranchers, and businesses to develop customized estate plans and navigate the legal processes. During this presentation they will share case studies with options for participants to consider as they embark on establishing or revising their plans.

“I enjoy simplifying the estate planning process for clients,” states Mindi. “As an estate planning attorney and agriculture advocate who grew up helping my family operate our ranch, I skillfully prioritize client goals and provide the right combination of advice and support to give peace of mind in matters that often cause distress or uncertainty.”

This duo’s presentation will cover tactical, legal and emotional topics that can help farmers ranchers and Agri-business owners refine their current plans or even being the estate planning process.

“Our goal at Hyatt McIntire & Associates is to help people control their lives and assets through thoughtful and customized legal documents,” states Amanda. “I use my background in agriculture, my passion for protecting and improving the lives of local farmers and ranchers, and my legal knowledge to craft customized plans that will give my clients peace of mind that they have reduced uncertainty and legal expenses for family members at a later date.”

Prop 19 Real Impacts to Family Farms and Ranches
Tracy Schor, UCCE Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor

California voters approved proposition 19 in November of 2020, significantly affecting certain types of real property transfers. The measure has a narrow exclusion for family farm transfers that you should consider during your Ag Legacy planning. “Just when you think you have wrapped up a generational transfer, don’t be surprised by letter from the Board of Equalization and a higher tax bills from your county tax accessor, that are triggered by values, and land ownership structures,” states Tracy Schohr, Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor in Plumas, Sierra and Butte Counties.

Tools for Estate Planning: Communication and Conservation
Tim Koopmann, Rancher in Alameda County

In the middle of California’s Bay Area, Tim Koopmann’s 850-acre family ranch is nestled between a golf course named after an endangered species, commuter-packed Interstate Highway 680 and ranchettes on what used to be working rangelands. Tim will share about the challenges endured in the 1990s, following the passing of his parents and grappling with the option to sell the ranch. The estate taxes on the small working ranch, in an area with some of the nation’s most expensive land, reached nearly $750,000 (today that tax would be millions).

“Our family has faced the difficult decision all farmers and ranchers will face if they don’t have an estate plan. Since my parents and grandparents failed to plan, I have had to sell hundreds of acres of irrigated lands in the Central Valley and enter into a permanent conservation agreement in order to preserve our family heritage,” states Tim Koopmann. “I have taken a much different approach to estate planning and communication for the next generation – to sustain future generational transfers.”
